| Most of my guy mates have Wiis actually. I can see the appeal, i've played it. They're pretty fun as it goes and you dont have to spend oodles of time on it ala PS3 or 360. It's casual and fun...what gaming should be tbh. They've marketed it well. | |

| What? No. 360 games aren't on a HDDVD format anyway. Neither are PS3 games on Blu-Ray at the moment either. | |

| Toshiba helps Sony cut PS3 production costs
Only a day after Toshiba pulled HD DVD from the high-definition DVD business, conceding defeat in a long-running format war with Sony’s Blu-ray, the company has officially finalized a previously announced $835 joint venture with its rival that will help lower PS3 production costs.
The joint venture, to be named at a later date, will manufacture Cell chips and RSX graphic chips, both used in the PS3, as well as other microchips that go into Toshiba products. With this, Sony is trying to streamline its operations by getting rid of assets which it simply does not need or are not part of its core business. Toshiba, in turn, will benefit from the deal as they now plan to ramp up its chip operations rapidly after a partnership was revealed with SanDisk.

| Metal Gear Solid 4 Confirmed To Hit PS3 June 12th Posted by Victor Dangelo | Feb 29, 2008 10:31 Konami has confirmed that Metal Gear Solid 4 will release as an exclusive game on the PS3 in the U.S. and Europe on June 12, 2008. Konami stated that Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots is going to be like a summer blockbuster in a sense. The game has been delayed quite a few times over the past year or so, but with Grand Theft Auto IV coming out at the end of April, and then Metal Gear Solid 4 in June, it seems that PS3 owners are going to have plenty to play! Konami also announced that all who pre-order MGS 4 will have guaranteed access to the online beta test for the game in April.

| Grand Theft Auto IV to take 100 hours to complete...
"If you're not in a rush and you answer the phone when it rings, it'll take about 100 hours to complete," said a spokesman when speaking to VideoGamer about the upcoming Grand Theft Auto 4.
"It's harder to distinguish between main and side missions - there are loads of both. But there are more main missions than side missions," they added.
GTA 4 will make heavy use of the phone to call in jobs, set up dates, arrange side missions, and access online multiplayer, reports VideoGamer. Additionally, Rockstar said there will be no demo for the game before its April 29 release on for Xbox 360 and PS3.

| Sony announced today that its PlayStation 3 is poised to take the next step in the evolution of the Blu-ray Disc format. The firmware update, due soon, will update the PS3 to Blu-ray Disc Profile 2.0, also referred to as BD Live. BD Live enables Internet-connected activities such as multiplayer gaming, e-commerce, downloading new content, and social networking.BD Live impressed crowds earlier this year at the Consumer Electronics Show, where Sony demonstrated downloading ring tones and new content to a BD Live player. Sony announced last October that the PlayStation 3 would support BD Live. Now, it appears that the PS3 will be the first Blu-ray Disc player to support this latest advancement in the Blu-ray format. Sony Electronics' own forthcoming BD Live-capable players aren't due out until this summer and fall.Big News for PS3
Director of PlayStation Network Operations, Eric Lempel, revealed the news in his latest blog entry, ahead of the company sending out a press announcement. The first titles to take advantage of BD Live are due out on April 8 from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment: The 6th Day and Walk Hard--The Dewey Cox Story. The extent of the BD Live features on these titles remains unknown Releasing this firmware update is a pretty cagey move on Sony's part. Since the PS3's release, frequent updates to the system have brought boatloads of needed features on-board--including the ability to upscale standard-definition DVDs. Research and disc sales show that consumers are using the PS3 as a Blu-ray player. The PS3 played a role in the growing volume of Blu-ray disc sales, which in turn prompted Warner Brothers to back Blu-ray Disc exclusively at the start of the year. Warner's move led to the format war with rival HD DVD. Firmware 2.20: Other Features
Other multimedia additions for the upcoming release include the ability to copy PlayStation 3 Music and Photo playlists to a PSP system (previously, you could create Music and Photo playlists on the PS3, but couldn't export them to a PSP). Another feature for PSP users: turn your PSP into a remote control, for playing back music files on your PS3 without turning on your TV. You can also play long DivX and .WMV format files (over 2 GB). Disc playback has been enhanced, to allow resume play: You can pick up where you left off on a DVD or BD disc, even if you've ejected the disc and inserted a different movie or game in the interim. Finally, Sony says the PS3's Internet browser now displays some Web pages faster. You can also save file files locally or to external storage media via the PS3 Web brower.

| March 20, 2008 Sony Adding Blu-ray Profile 2.0 to PS3
Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) Thursday disclosed plans for an update to its Playstation 3 gaming console that will add Blu-ray Disc Profile 2.0, a feature that enables gamers to download extra content via the Internet. Via a firmware update scheduled for release later this month, Sony is adding support for Blu-ray Disc Profile 2.0, also known as BD-LIVE, and is also adding the ability for consumers to move music and photo playlists from PS3 to Sony's PSP (Playstation Portable) devices. "With Blu-ray established as the high-definition optical disc standard, more consumers are ready to jump in and take advantage of everything the format offers," said Scott Steinberg, vice president of product marketing for SCEA, in a statement. Movie studios that embed Blu-ray Profile 2.0 features into their high-definition titles open the door for consumers to access special, sometimes exclusive, content, including bonus scenes, video shorts and trailers, ringtones or even interactive movie-based games that can be played live online. Along with the PS3 update, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment said it will release two BD-LIVE enabled titles on April 8: Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story, starring Will Farrell, and The 6th Day with Arnold Schwarzenegger, both of which will include exclusive downloadable content not available on the discs.
Users will need an Internet connection and at least 1 Gbyte of local storage to tap into BD-LIVE features, Sony said.

| BD-Live (AKA Blu-ray Disc Profile 2.0) titles were released earlier this year, despite the fact that there were no players yet capable of supporting BD-Live. Once again, the PS3 shows why it should be the Blu-ray player of choice for even non-gamers, as Firmware v2.20, which Sony says is “coming up in the next few days,” will add support for BD-Live, making the PS3 the first BD-Live capable player available. BD-Live requires two secondary decoders, 1GB of local storage for updates and content, and an Internet connection. It will allow you to connect to the internet and receive downloadable content to add to the title. You’ll recall that there is more than one Blu-ray support profile defined:
- 1.0 - the launch profile, and secondary audio and video decoders
are optional, as is local storage and network connectivity. The majority of standalone players fit into this category.
- 1.1 - newer profile; players need a secondary audio and video
decoder to handle picture-in-picture, as well as at least 256MB of local storage for content.
- 2.0 - latest, requiring the two secondary decoders, 1GB of local storage for updates and content, and an Internet connection.
Obviously the additional hardware requirements mean that not every Blu-ray player can be upgraded with a firmware change. In fact, the first standalone BD-Live player will not arrive until April (the Panasonic DMP-BD50). The only other announced BD-Live player is the and the Sony BDP-S550 (coming this autumn). Both of these are expected to cost at least $100 more than an entry-level PS3. Additional changes in FW v2.20, according to Sony:
- The ability to copy PS3 Music and Photo playlists to a PSP system.
We introduced the ability to create Music and Photo playlists on the PS3 in firmware update v2.0. Now you can easily export your playlists to your PSP.
- You can now play DivX and WMV format files that are over 2 GB. In
addition, you can now display subtitles when viewing DivX files.
- Resume Play - begin playing a DVD or BD disc from the point where
you previously stopped it, even if you eject the disc and insert a different movie or game.
- Use your PSP as a remote control to play back your music files on your PS3 without turning on your TV.
- The Internet browser now displays some web pages faster. In
addition [Save Target] has been added as an option under file. This option lets you save a file that is linked to a web page to your PS3 hard drive or storage media.
We Say: Having a PS3 next to your TV may not be as “home decor-friendly” as a standalone player, and thus harder to get past your wife or partner, but it sure seems to be the best way to stay at the bleeding-edge of Blu-ray. And of course, the console gaming portion of it is more than an after-thought …
