| Fernando Torres led Liverpool to three vital points at Anfield as Portsmouth’s much-vaunted away threat failed to materialise. The Reds dominated from the off, taking the lead through Yossi Benayoun and going two up after a quarter of an hour thanks to Distin’s own goal. Benjani’s super strike reduced the deficit for Pompey before Torres' double put the result beyond doubt.First HalfRafael Benítez named the same side that lost to Manchester United, while Pompey brought in Hermann Hreidarsson for the injured Pamarot. Liverpool threatened from the outset. The biggest early move of note saw Kuyt head onto Kewell, who fired a couple of feet wide. Glen Johnson then did brilliantly to deflect Kuyt’s shot off target. Torres tore through the Pompey defence, Kuyt had seemed certain to score, but Johnson hurt himself in the process. It was all Liverpool, and they made it count on 13 minutes through Yossi Benayoun. Torres played the ball left to Kewell, who cut in, pulling the ball back to Benayoun who volleyed home from just inside the penalty area. Goalkeeper David James had no chance. Three minutes later, a freakish own goal doubled Liverpool’s lead. Torres was again the instigator, receiving the ball with his back to goal. The Spaniard hit the ball on the turn, deflecting it wickedly off Distin and past a frustrated James. Brimming with confidence, Gerrard launched a speculative shot wide, while Torres caused panic in the visitors’ defence every time he had the ball. With Pompey desperately trying to get a grip on the game, a scrappy period of play ensued: Benayoun and Kuyt had further chances for the Reds, Mendes shot wide for Pompey, but there was little else of significance to report from the first half. Second Half Harry Redknapp made two changes at the break, with Lauren replacing the injured Johnson and Kanu coming on for Utaka as Portsmouth switched to 4-4-2. Pompey were certainly more forceful after the break: Diop fired over the bar and Kanu shot wide, but nothing seriously troubled Reina until he had to pick the ball out of his net. Kanu caught Liverpool napping in the 57th minute, receiving the ball on the left before whipping it across to Benjani on the right. A great first touch from the Zimbabwean left Riise for dead, before he smashed a left foot drive in at Reina’s near post. The keeper was rooted to his spot, so fierce was the shot. Shocked by the goal, Liverpool once more assumed the ascendancy. James parried a Sami Hyypia header before almost being beaten by Harry Kewell’s looping effort from distance. The Aussie’s attempt went inches over the bar, but only a minute later his team went 3-1 up as a ball from Mascherano down the right evaded the Pompey defence. Substitute Ryan Babel won the race to the loose ball, his shot rebounding off the advancing James for Torres to side-foot home. If that didn’t put the result beyond doubt, Torres’ second of the afternoon did. A superb cross field ball from Carragher found Gerrard, who stretched to head the ball across the box for the Spanish No9 to rifle past James from 12 yards. Torres was then taken off to a standing ovation as Liverpool coasted to a deserved win. Line-ups: Liverpool (4-4-2): Reina – Arbeloa, Hyypia, Carragher, Riise – Benayoun (Babel 64), Gerrard, Mascherano, Kewell (Aurélio 76) – Torres (Lucas 86), Kuyt Subs not used – Itandje, Voronin Away (4-4-1-1): James – Johnson (Lauren 46), Campbell, Distin, Hreidarsson – Utaka (Kanu 46), Diop, Mendes, Kranjcar – Muntari (Taylor 73) - Benjani Subs not used – Begovic, Nugent Goals:

| Rafael Benitez is facing a defensive headache ahead of this weekend's trip to Manchester City.
The Reds could be without Sami Hyypia after the Finnish defender limped out of the Boxing Day victory over Derby with an ankle injury.
With Alvaro Arbeloa still recovering from flu and Daniel Agger on his way back from a broken metatarsal, youngster Jack Hobbs could be handed a starting role at the City of Manchester stadium.
"Sami has an ankle problem, it is a difficult situation," said Benitez. "Arbeloa has flu so this could now be a real problem.
"Daniel Agger is closer, he has been training this week. We will wait to see how Sami is but we can use Jack or we could push Agger to play, we will wait and see.
"And Jamie Carragher has four yellow cards so that just makes the problem more worrying.
"But Agger and Hobbs are both training and Arbeloa will recover from his bout of sickness. All that will be a big boost for us."

| wel for some reason ive been unable to view the site. anyway, december is over and we are now a massive 12 points behind league leaders arsenal. January is here, and apart from the slovakian unknown defender, we've not been linked with anybody. media speculation gets bigger and bigger, fueled by our inability to score, and our best ability seems to be wasting more and more chances. Frustrating to watch. While a team like Man city can spend soo much money to get to where they are now, they are STILL looking to get more and more players in this january. With us it the media already decided we had spent too much money and that Rafa should not be given more money this january. I watched the Man U game, we looked afraid to go forward just incase they can come up with a quick counter attack that would kill the game off. In truth the game opened my eyes to the gap in world class playing staff we have in our hands. Rooney 30 mill Nani, Anderson 30 mill Ferdinand 30 mill Ronaldo 17 mill Heargreaves 17 Mill Carrick 18 mill Teves (would cost at least 20 mill) Torres 24 mill Veronin Free Benayon 5 mill Crouch 6 mill Kuyt 9 mill Pennant 5 mill Alonso 10 mill Arbeola 4 mill Aurelio 5 mill Babel 13 mill Arguebly their small purchases (vidic 7 mill, Evra 5 mill) are by far better signings than ours. But in general you look at the talent and the prices paid for them by Man U, compared to us. AND as much as i hate to admit, IT SHOWS. firstly the rotation system employed by Benitez does not generally help settle players, especially those with points to prove. Some of Benitez's decisions and tactics (play it safe) is questionable, but i will give him the benefit of doubt simply because of who he is; a very good manager with a proven track record. for the life of me i cannot understand why Benayon is preferred to Babel on the wings, or Why Babel is denied the chance to shine as a centre forward. you look at our backline Arbeola/finnan carra hyypia/agger Aurelio/riise compare that with Man United Brown/Neville Vidic Ferdinand Evra or arsenal Sagna Toure Sanderos Cliche when we compare the defence here its easy to see why we're struggling; we have committed defenders, as opposed to commtted and world class defenders. Our full backs are impotent going forward as they lack the pace needed, AS evra and sagna/cliche always run up and down that line effectively. our midfield is a dilemma- Rafa has two choices; either play Gerrard with alonso, or play Gerrard with Mascherano. Alonso is THE Don when it comes to distribution, but he's not a tackler like Mascherano and Rafa feels the pressure from the media and fans alike, if he didnt start Gerrard, or even if he substituted him. We dont have a classic play maker, we have attacking midfielder in Gerrard. This means our passing in the middle of the park is not to the standard you need at the top level (Anderson/Fabregas/Elano) instead what we do is go forward with the ball and hope that other teams would panick to give us a goal- our reliance on Gerrard is harming us, we have 4 strikers and our second best top scorer is Gerrard. On the wings we have Kewl and Pennant/Benayon- and we only need to look at C.Ronaldo and Giggs/nani, or Hleb/ Eboue/Rosisky/Willcot to understand we're not quite there yet, talent wise. Babel is good enough to start every game, yet he doesnt even get a proper game. Why fight so hard to land him then? Too many questions, but the result is the same; we lack the depth in talent to really hurt teams, it is certainly no coincidence that we find ourselves stuck in 4th position- albeit with Agger absent. | |

| he anticipated this.. and wanted to sign either chellini or heinze
chellini is now one of the best CB in the serie a
and heinze.. well.. we all know how good he is
unfortunately.. none of those things happened... and look at us now. suffering from stupid defensive mistakes in the beginning.. which soaked up all our confidence ahead of the manu game
compare that with our game against arsenal... which if agger was available.. we would've won i think, especially when you look at their goal
i dont get what all the fuss is about? we NEED more players... better players.. we're not gonna win this with a bunch of unestablishred second rate players.
crouch-voronin = tevez-roony? hell no
i think we should sell them and get a good striker.. one that could help torres and not have us only dependant on him and gerrard for goals
i feel sorry for pennant.. i think he has a lot of potential.. but the injury came at a VERY BAD TIME for him.. now he has to struggle to regain his form
kewell... well, he's sorta reaching the start of his decline.. i dont see us keeping him, unless he plays as a support striker
bottom line... we have a 80% ready squad
we need the other 20% to give manU and arsenal a run for their money
we're better than chelsea this season.. wait and see.

the clubs needs to get back on its feet.. a 93rd minute PK isnt gonna help regain any confidence or points!
but i agree with you... players like kuyt dont really deserve to play.. if it was up to me. i'd start torres and babel all the time.. and leave crouch/kuyt for cup games.
i hope those stupid owners own up and pay some money, its a shame we had to sell sissoko just to get enough money to buy mascherano.

| Presumably Redknapp would have said the same in 1990 about Alex Ferguson, who had taken a top four side at United for the previous four seasons under Ron Aktinson and turned them into ninth placed finishers (on average) over his first four seasons?
Benitez's league record outstrips Ferguson's in every possible way when comparing their respective first four years in charge, and while football has changed, and the past cannot be compared to the present with total accuracy, the fact is that no-one in the world thought Alex Ferguson could ever win a league title at United, and certainly not the United fans holding up banners asking for him to be sacked.
I'm sure Ferguson proved more insightful men than Redknapp wrong.
Just because Ferguson ended United's 26-year drought it doesn't therefore automatically follow that Benítez will do the same at Liverpool, but equally, you need to compare the managers to where they were in their respective tenures to get the context right.
The comparisons between United back then and Liverpool now are apt: England's two biggest clubs, with all the monumental pressure that comes with it, both trying to end a two-decade drought without the league title. Except Ferguson took four years to win his first trophy, and spent most of that time in the bottom half of the table.
If anyone should know how difficult it is to win the league at Liverpool it's Redknapp. He was part of teams in the '90s that finished sixth, eighth and seventh. More tellingly, this was also when the team were pretty pathetic in Europe too, and only the occasional visitors to a cup final.
Indeed, Benitez took the Reds to more finals in his first three years - and more important ones at that - than Souness, Evans and Houllier managed in the entire '90s. With that in mind, I'd like to see the ex-captain showing the current manager a little more respect.
Redknapp has now joined the list of those thinking that because Benitez has had more success in Europe with Liverpool, that is his priority. This is lazy stereotyping. Redknapp also talks about rotation (yawn) again, but misses the point that as with Wenger and Ferguson, Benitez rarely changes his core of key men except for the Carling Cup. When fit, Reina, Gerrard, Torres and Carragher play virtually every game.
I admit that I thought Liverpool could mount a title challenge this year, but it's been a campaign fraught with well-publicised difficulties. There's also been a pretty big injury list all season long, affecting several key players.
But I have also long been aware that it's going to be far harder for the Reds to end a two-decade wait for the title than it would be for the other three big teams to become Champions.
At Liverpool there's a much more complex scenario. Psychologically speaking, Liverpool are in the toughest position of any Premier League team.
First of all there's the unprecedented success that lingers in living memory of every adult, which makes any fine achievement a failure in the eyes of many. It causes the kind of insanity that makes some fans say they don't care about the Champions League.
The years of relative failure in the '90s, and in some years since, should lower expectations, but they don't. No-one expects Blackpool or Nottingham Forest to be English champions, but 'by rights' Liverpool should.
Why? Some fans say "Because we're Liverpool". But you can't win leagues by merely quoting history at your opponents. You can't dismiss Chelsea, with their expensive squad, and say "but we're Liverpool". On Sunday Chelsea brought on two subs (Malouda and Mikel) who each cost more than any single Liverpool player on the pitch.
You can't dismiss United, with their riches and their manager and players with league title success, and say "but we're Liverpool". And the same applies to Arsenal, whose current success owes much to Wenger's experience and scouting over the past decade, and from allowing a young side to blossom.
Manchester United and Arsenal, with the same managers as today, won league titles in the years immediately before Benitez arrived in England. Chelsea, with a squad twice as costly as anyone else's, and three times that of Liverpool's, won the league in Benitez's first season in England.
So by 2005, Benítez was seriously up against it, before he'd ever really had a chance to get going. If anything, the addition of Chelsea to the power-base and the ability of longstanding managers like Wenger and Ferguson makes it harder to be a Liverpool manager than ever before.
By 2005 these three rivals had that success in the bank. But with Liverpool, there's just a growing pressure with every year that passes. And the stereotyping doesn't help.
Liverpool, and Benitez, appeared to be put in a psychological straightjacket by the press after that first season: 'duffers' in the league but majestic on the continent. It was putting the club into a box and taping it up. This is a societal trend. Perhaps in the players’ minds it starts to become a self-fulfilling prophecy. No matter who is the manager, how do you overcome that?
The first year was always going to be a tough league campaign for Benitez, and of course the manager had to learn about English football; that was only natural, and it was a harsh lesson at times. How could he know as much in those first months as rival managers who had been in their jobs for donkey's years?
His second season was a relative success in the league, with 82 points and an outstanding win-percentage: 25 out of 38 won. Add cup games against Premier League opposition, including four ties against Chelsea and Manchester United, and it looked even better. This told me that Rafa could succeed in England. But getting that first league title was always going to be the toughest task of all.
Whereas Arsenal unexpectedly won the league under Wenger after 18 months, Liverpool had a surprise European title at the start of Benítez's reign. And anyone who doesn't believe me when I talk about how teams can be stereotyped, just look at Arsenal's 'Invincibles'.
This very 'European' team, whatever its personnel over that time, has thus far failed to win a single European trophy in the 12 years under Wenger.
Why is this? Possibly because in those first two or three campaigns, Arsenal failed more so than was expected. While some of that should have been foreseen - it was after all a learning curve in those initial campaigns - it set the same kind of psychological barrier in place that the Liverpool team suffer from in the league. Once you're labelled, it’s hard to escape it.
It seemed the better Arsenal got domestically the worse they fared on the continent. Perhaps you could look at Wenger's tactics, etc, but this was a team who, between 2002 and 2004, should have been able to beat anyone. The only time they have reached the last four was when they were beaten finalists in 2006, in the season when everyone felt they were a poorer side and stood far less chance of doing well.
This stereotyping, and an overburdening, overpowering expectation, is probably the same for the England national team, and in domestic football, for Newcastle United. The difference, of course, is that Liverpool have been winning things of real note during one particular kind of drought.
While I desperately want the league title to return to Anfield, I've been thrilled by the team winning the European Cup, FA Cup, and making it to another Champions League final. I'm incredibly proud that the team has made the last 16 of the Champions League every year under Rafa, not to mention those two finals, because before he arrived that seemed as impossible as it now does to win the league.
Liverpool's psychological situation is almost the reverse of Manchester United's. What United would do for another Champions League success, almost a decade after their only final in 15 consecutive years competing in it under Ferguson. You know how much Ferguson desperately wants to win it, yet he hasn't even come close in the last nine years, and didn't even make it past the group stage two years ago.
Anyone who's been single and on the dating scene at some point in their life knows that the more you want something, the harder it becomes; you reek of desperation in the search for a partner. You try too hard.
Going back to Wenger, the difference between Arsenal and Liverpool is that the Reds' early success came in Europe, and of course that's made subsequent good runs in Champions League easier to achieve.
The confidence, the true gut-level belief, was put in place by the run to Istanbul and the final itself. Liverpool have that in the bag now, and under Benitez, always will. That's why the club were able to reach a second final in three years, including victory in the Nou Camp, and also why, when this year's campaign got off to such a bad start (as can happen in football), the team could pull off three remarkable and emphatic victories when every single point was essential.
The examples of psychological barriers are everywhere. Why do Liverpool do so much better against Chelsea in the cups than in the league? - and in high-pressure semi-finals to boot. Why have Liverpool yet to beat Manchester United in the league under Benitez, but in the one cup encounter the Reds deservedly won?
For me, it speaks of psychological factors, and in sport, they are crucially important but also incredibly difficult to change. Chelsea and United wanted to win those encounters with Liverpool at least as much as they did those league games. But without the oppressive weight of the word 'Premier League' bearing down on them, the Reds had more freedom.
But things can change quickly in football. Who thought Arsenal, who finished below the Reds for two seasons, would suddenly click into gear this year? After all, this is the season when Spurs were supposed to finish above the Gunners. Players like Hleb and Adebayor turned into top-class propositions after two unspectacular seasons in England, and what’s to say young players as gifted and promising as Ryan Babel and Lucas can't make similar improvements?
No-one can doubt that the league has become an albatross, a millstone, for Liverpool, and had done so long before Benitez arrived. Quite how any manager can lift that burden is anyone's guess. It won't be easy, that's for sure.
Perhaps Benitez's best hope lies with the outstanding youngsters he is procuring, and how, as at Arsenal, they improve the side once they've matured. Should the next generation come through at Anfield and show their undoubted class in the next few years, players like Torres, Agger, Reina, Mascherano, Alonso, Skrtel, Babel, Lucas and Gerrard should still be around to make the squad stronger than ever. And even Carragher and Finnan have a few years left ahead of them.
But for the time being the Reds remain a revered and feared Champions League team and, after the European failures and humiliations of the '90s, and the across-the-board mediocrity, I for one am happy for the team to be considered top-class in such an important context.

| Reina: 7
Arbeola: 4 - caught in posession, slow and stupid - the out of position Benayon isnt actually a winger so Arbeloa was under more pressure than he should have been
Skrtel: 8 - handled Drogba brilliantly in the first leg and continued to do that until he was forced out injured- deserves recognition nevertheless.
Carra: 6 - not comfortable against Drogba as he couldnt match him in strength or pace. Great tackle to deny Drogba a certain goal but Drogba was growing more and more as the game went on.
Hyypia: 4 - poor game, the less said about it the better.
Riise: 3 - I've never seen Riise as a defender and if he is, he's a terrible one. Slow when moving, got caught out of possession for the killer goal- Benitez should have known better- Birmingham's first goal was partly because Riise allowed the cross in by failing to tackle his man. No crosses.
Kuyt: 2 - works his socks off as usual BUT his luck ran out. couldn't pass Ashley cole, largely anonymous. Hardly did anything right.
Alonso: 4 - his passes were ineffective, on a slippery surface he needed to be extra accurate - he wasnt. Spilled possession a few time, im more annoyed with his miscontrol/indecisiveness/caught in two minds/lost the plot for a second - straight after Babel's goal.
Mascherano: 5 - not his best game, when your right/left backs lack class, you play with wingers (benayon/kuyt) who arent really wingers, a partner whose not really doing a good job on what the aspect of the game he's best at (alonso- distribution) and a crazy manager to go on top of that.. then the chances are you will be under far more pressure to defend, chase balls, help out the helpless right/left flanks while trying to stop Ballack and Lampard. Impossible. He didnt have the influence he should.
Benayon: 3 - did nothing meaningful other than provide the first goal. not a winger, does better when he's runnin in the centre of the final third, lacks power, not good in the air, not quick AND DEFINITELY NOT A WINGER. What he has thats good is an eye for short passes. that is it. played in the position he played at tonight exposes the right flank completely. What makes me angry is the fact that he's preferred to Babel.. un-fuckin-forgiveable.
Gerrard: 6 - the captain was nowhere to be seen in the first half. Better in the second, granted, but being almost 10 years younger than Makalele you would expect Gerrard to cause him problems. Clearly lost the battle against Makalele- who in my eye was the real man of the match.
Torres: 7 - I feel for him. i really do. i hope he hasn't lost faith in liverpool, if not Rafa.
Babel: 7 - the kid has talent, that is clear. Shame he didnt start the game. I fear Benitez could kill this kid's confidence with the way he deals with him.
Pennant: 4 - great against Birmingham city and teams like that, not so good against more quality left/right backs. One could argue that the timing he was introduced was too late for him to get used to the pace and grow into the game.
Benitez: 1 Your luck ran out, playing players out of their position is one thing, making soo many mistakes in such a vital game will be terrifying for liverpool fans. Started the game with Benayon instead of Babel, sticking to Kuyt for the whole game shows so much faith- or perhaps exposes Benitez desire in drawing the game, not win it - either way, it was a big mistake as he should have been substituted. What is unjustifyable is replacing the irreplaceable Torres with Babel when he should have took out either Benayon or Kuyt.. no, he should have started the game and finished it. I cannot see Liverpool wining the champions league again nor the Premiership with players like Arbeola and Riise/finnan in the defence, or Benayon, Veronin, kuyt in the bench. Rafa, its YOU who cost us this game. Terrible.

| cool it teee... rafa only replaced torres because he pulled a hamstring.
and rest assured, you wont be seeing riise, (finnan hardly played, we're definitely getting a new RB, benayoun is a sub, never a starter, and ofcoarse voronin is crap (well, a carling cup playing at the most, but he was for free)
we already signed 5 new players... i expect 1 or 2 to be first team starters, and the rest in the reserves to watch, play.and learn
plus.. im expecting a torres-like signing
if we can manage to sign a player of the same caliber as torres, then we're gonna get closer and closer.
think about it teee .. injuries fucked us
agger, xabi alosno, pennant, and ofcoarse aurelio and skertl in the last very important games.
we need good backups for these players...
or
players who dont get injured... like Dogbreath and his african amigos. who NEVER seem to get injured!
So, Liverpool's quest for glory is over for another year. But, despite off-the-pitch distractions, there are plenty of positives which suggest the wait for number 19 could soon be over.
finally:
This has been a year when the search for a 20-goal striker finally ended, and some; a year when the most exciting partnership since Dalglish and Rush was formed; and a year when youngsters of the quality of Babel, Skrtel and Lucas Leiva showed promising signs of long and prosperous careers in English football.
So, today was not our day, but the signs are there that tomorrow could well be. Goodnight. YNWA.

| Skrtel was best Liverpool player in last 2 games against Chelsea. Liverpool did good job this season. You cant expect to always win throphies. Maybe they could have done better in EPL but SF of CL and 4th place in EPL is not that bad. | |
