but dont think Rafa improved him, Rafa knew mascherano has quality from the start. When liverpool got him on loan the 23 year old had already played over 50 games for Argentina- that speaks volumes of his talent. West Ham, i could kill the idiot who benched him.
He will get even better.

if he can immobilize these players, I think very well could be on his way to receiving some awards from the FA or europe.

Hicks Still Wants Parry Out, Sole Control
Liverpool co-owner Tom Hicks has added to the drama at Anfield revealing he wants to introduce a new team to run club finances within six weeks...
The bitter spat with fellow co-owner George Gillett and club chief executive Rick Parry shows no signs of dying down following this latest revelation, mere days after Hicks sent a letter to Parry asking him, having been at the club almost a decade to his 14 months, to resign.
Parry branded the request 'offensive' and promptly shrugged it off, insisting he was staying.
The request came just 48 hours after Liverpool secured qualification to their third Champions League semi-final in four years - and like the previous two, it is to be against Chelsea.
Speaking to The Mail on Sunday, Hicks has today reiterated that he wants Parry out of the job and a brand new team installed to run the team's finances in the next six weeks.
Hicks is said to be partial to promoting commercial director Ian Ayre - a native Liverpudlian - to the role of chief-executive.
His scathing assessment of Parry makes unpleasant reading: he believes he is holding back the club both commercially and on the pitch, and also intimated that the chief executive was involved in the infamous Klinsmann talks last year, which arguably saw the boardroom drama at Anfield at its all-time high as manager Rafael Benitez's position was disgracefully compromised.
Further to this, the blame game continues: Hicks believes that Parry's lack of communication skills have seen the club limited in their transfer activity, and that with Parry removed from his post, manager Benitez would have more freedom and scope to get the players he desires.
Arrogant?
Hicks said: "Rick Parry has been Liverpool's CEO for 10 years and we haven't won a league championship under his leadership.
"Our commercial revenues have not kept up with other top clubs during that time, which has made it very difficult to compete for the Premier League.
"After watching him operate, I came to the conclusion it was time to ask him to resign, due to his inability to manage an organisation, his seemingly arrogant attitude to our supporters and his lack of communication with Rafa.
"I reached my decision a few weeks ago but waited until after the games against Everton and Arsenal. It is important to try to have a new CEO in place by May so we can begin working with Rafa on player transfers."
Meanwhile once want-away co-owner Gillett backs Parry, who is reportedly astonished following the criticism of his credentials and track record.
The executive wants a meeting of the six-man board to be called to discuss Hicks' grievances and to resolve the issues.
Parry is confident that there is a majority already behind him that should keep him in the executive hot-seat, with Gillett and his son Foster likely to be in his corner along with former chairman David Moores - the only backing Hicks is likely to get is from his son, Tommy jnr.
Not Helpful
Parry said: "I stand by my track record in English football and as chief executive of Liverpool Football Club. It would be inappropriate for me to comment in detail on these allegations — that should be a matter for the Liverpool board.
"In fact, I would welcome an opportunity to discuss these matters with our co-owners and board colleagues. This continuous airing of issues in the media is clearly not helpful at this crucial stage of our season."
Hicks though, is relentless. He is unhappy with accusations levelled at him that he was responsible for the Klinsmann talks when, apparently, Gillett planned the talks and Parry had full knowledge of them. Parry does not deny these accusations, but insists he was at the meeting with both co-owners.
Sole control is Hicks' ultimate goal. He believes that, should he be given that power, Rafa Benitez would be given a long-term deal and that the majority of the club's mounting debt would be cleared before the launch of their new stadium, Stanley Park, in 2011.
One Strong Owner
Hicks said: "It's time for Liverpool to have one strong owner to give Rafa the support he needs to win trophies, grow our commercial revenues worldwide and build the best stadium in the world. I believe I am that owner. "Under my ownership, Ian Ayre, Philip Nash [the finance director] and Rafa Benitez would make an outstanding management team. As we prepare to move into our new stadium in 2011, we will have the resources to be competitive year in and year out, and restore Liverpool Football Club to its position as the No 1 club in the world."
Moores, who sold to the Americans just over a year ago, is displeased with their conduct and the impact it has had on the club's integrity. He has called for immediate resolution and co-operation from the Americans, who he believes should think about themselves and not the club.
Not Acceptable
Moores said: "It makes the club a laughing stock and that's not acceptable. This is not what the club is about. It is embarrassing and not an acceptable way of doing things. It needs to be resolved as quickly as possible. The two owners have got to stop thinking of themselves and start thinking of the club, its values, traditions and heritage."

Hicks Promises Rafa New Contract, Calls Parry A Disaster
Liverpool co-owner Tom Hicks has publicly promised manager Rafael Benitez a new contract if gains control of the club from George Gillett, his erstwhile partner. But in an interview with Sky Sports News, Hicks has also branded chief executive Rick Parry's time in charge at Anfield as "a disaster."
Interviewed by Sky Sports News, Tom Hicks said: "If I was to buy George Gillett out, the first thing I'd do is offer Rafa a one-year extension. Hopefully we'd have success and extend it again.
"We communicate regularly. He's got the guys playing very well - Rafa has unique skills. We are playing pretty well and I give Rafa all credit for that."
'Parry Must Go'
But the American co-owner of Liverpool also says chief executive Rick Parry's tenure has been a 'disaster'.
Last week, Hicks sent a letter to Parry asking him to resign from his role. And in an exclusive interview with Sky, he criticised Liverpool's failure to compete commercially with their 'Big Four' Premier League rivals.
"If you look at what has happened under Rick's leadership, it has been a disaster," he told the broadcasters.
"We have fallen so far behind the other top clubs. The new stadium should have been built three or four years ago.
"We have two sponsors, maybe three. We should have 12 or 15. We are not doing anything in Asia the way Manchester United and Barcelona are.
"We have a tremendous number of fans in Asia. So we have got the top brand in the world of football, but we just don't know how to commercialise and get the money for it to use to buy great players.
"Rick needs to resign from Liverpool football club. He's put his heart into it, but it is time for a change.
"You have to be able to work with the manager and Rick has proved he can't do that."
Unworkable Relationship With Gillett
Hicks and co-owner George Gillett bought out Liverpool in February 2007, but Hicks admits that their relationship has now completely broken down.
"At this point it is unworkable," he revealed. "We started this as friends, but 50-50 is a difficult business proposition because you cannot do anything without your partner's approval.
"We had a good honeymoon but, over a period of time, there have been issues, the stadium being the main one.
"If George doesn't sell - because I am not going to sell - I guess we stay in this position that we are in.
"It's complicated but it's going to happen [Hicks buying Gillett out] although I can't force George to accept.
"I am planning to make him a very attractive offer. If I had a majority on it [ownership of Liverpool] I could put more capital in.
"My goal is take all the debt off the club except the working capital needed and get the permanent financing totally in place for the stadium.
"I want the finances of the club to be secure. I want to be the majority owner of a group that buys the club and I have got a 25-year track record of being a very successful investor around the world.
"The fans don't like the fact that we borrowed a lot of money to buy the club but I will fix that."
DIC's Presence
Hicks then discussed the talks that Liverpool held with Dubai International Capital (DIC), whose attempt to purchase a minority stake in the club in March failed.
"DIC has no seat at the table. They are masters of the British tabloid spin. They want to stir the pot of Liverpool to create dissension," he added.
"I did talk to Dubai about being a 49 per cent partner but it just didn't work out. They didn't share the same vision I have and I didn't think they could become minority partners. I am not going to have any more 50-50 partners." Mark Hinton, Goal.com

ok firstly i wanna say that Hicks has a point with regards to Perry. I always wondered how liverpool fell soo far behind arsenal and Man United in financial terms. Being clueless i should have asked myself who is actually responsible for the financial management of the club and ultimately it goes down to Perry as he's the chief exec.
secondly i was very suprised to hear that it was Gillet who initiated the Klinsman move.. not to mention my other suprise that Perry was at that meeting and kept it from Rafa.
thirdly, a year extension shows his lack of knowledge of the game and his lack of appreciation for Rafa. Almost laughable. for me Rafa is the world's best manager but he needs the club to invest in players and we're utterly incapable of doing that and it is so frustrating for fans, imagine poor ol' Rafa; what a season he's having. We dont deserve him.
lastly the video was a PR move by Hicks- who had come to be seen as the main villain in this drama, to clear up his image and its so clear that a blind man could see it. Holding his liverpool cup and shirt while he watches his hokey team playing.. typical texan. G.W. Bush style idiot. Nevertheless, he raises interesting points, very very interesting.
God help us, look at the mess we're in and who's to blame but Parry and Moores.

the players are behind rafa
the FANS are behind rafa
whatever happens with the ownership, one things for sure, we'll stay strong.
sooner or later, hicks will come to his senses, and sell the club.. its pretty much like you said, a stupid PR stunt... divide and conquer, but its not gonna work.. we arent stupid ;p
and yes, parry and moores need to be thrown into sea... completely their fault for selling the club to the wrong people!!

Chelsea managed to sneak a invaluable away goal in the dying seconds of the first leg Champions League semi-final 1-1 draw at Anfield, making them favourites to progress to the final. However, some pundits are saying Liverpool will rip up the form sheet and produce a shock result, a predication boosted by the fact that the Reds will be rested before the second leg clash whilst the Blues will have to play their first eleven against league leaders Manchester United as they try to battle on two fronts. While the West Londoners host the Red Devils on Saturday, Liverpool will rotate their stars against Birmingham as their season in respect to their league aspirations is already over. But when asked if Liverpool will indeed benefit from Chelsea’s packed schedule, Benitez took a different view. “I don't know. Both teams will have four days after the games on Saturday”, said the Spaniard. “I don't think it will be a great advantage unless they have some problems. We are playing against Birmingham and that will be tough and physical, so it will be more or less the same.” Benitez did give in a little when pressed on whether Chelsea’s clash with United will take a good deal out of their players. ”It must be intense”, said Benitez about the big weekend fixture. “If they play with a high tempo because it is really important for them, then maybe there will be some advantage, but I don't think so.” Reuben Nagra --------------------------------------------------------- yeah i sorta agree with that.. i dont see either team playing with high tempo.. theres too much at stake to fuck it up.

Report: Benítez To Spend £30m On Five Players
A report in this morning's Sun claims that Rafa Benítez has decided to stay at Liverpool after a productive meeting with Tom Hicks and co yesterday. The Spaniard has now been given the green light to begin plans for his summer spending.
The report claims that spending at the club will be smaller than last season, with a budget of around £30m.
Barry First
Benítez reportedly plans to use this to bring in five players, the most expensive of whom will likely be Aston Villa captain Gareth Barry.
As has already been speculated, the Reds are one of a number of clubs fighting it out for the England international, but Villans boss Martin O'Neill will certainly not let his star man depart without putting up resistance. On The Cheap
Nevertheless, Benítez remains confident that Liverpool "will not need to spend big, big money" this summer and one man he has already tied up is Swiss international right-back Phillip Degen. The Borussia Dortmund defender is out of contract at the end of this season and has apparently already agreed to move to Anfield once this campaign draws to a close.
Spanish Influences
There are set to be changes at left-back too, with Athletic Bilbao's Fernando Amorebieta being mentioned, something that will only increase speculation that the under-fire John Arne Riise's time at Liverpool is up.
In midfield Benítez is said to have his eye on Atlético Madrid's Maxi Rodríguez as well as Wigan Athletic's right-winger Luís Antonio Valencia, also reportedly a target for rivals Manchester United.
It is unknown if a move for another striker is being planned, but Peter Crouch's and Andriy Voronin's Anfield futures are less than secure.

TORRES BREAKS RECORD IN FINAL DAY WIN
Liverpool have signed off with three points after second-half goals from Andriy Voronin and Fernando Torres secured a 2-0 victory at White Hart Lane.
The Reds opened the scoring through their ponytailed striker after an hour of dour end-of-season football.
From there the game burst into life, with Torres netting his 24th league goal of the campaign to see him overtake Ruud van Nistelrooy and become the most prolific foreigner ever in a debut season.
Liverpool could have had a hatful from there, not that it really mattered in what was a dead rubber of a game.
If the opening exchanges were a little flat, a giant inflatable ball which made its way on to the pitch certainly wasn't. It was allowed to roll around for several minutes until Didier Zokora delighted the home fans by booting it back.
It was 10 minutes before either team provided similar entertainment, Liverpool working it well down the right before Andriy Voronin's volley forced Radek Cerny into an acrobatic save.
The visitors were soon threatening again when Steven Gerrard pinged a lovely ball down the left for the onrushing Ryan Babel. Fernando Torres, the cause of fervent bouncing in the away end throughout, busted a gut to get into the box but a combination of poor control and good defending from Jonathan Woodgate had it that he needn't have bothered. Minutes later Babel did manage to produce an end product only to be denied by a diving Cerny.
It felt like chucking out time at the inn, both sides being ordered to finish their dregs before stumbling off for a kip ahead of a new, er, season. Not that either manager was showing signs of end-of-season fatigue. Both Benitez and countryman Juande Ramos stood animated through much of the first half, perhaps keen to earn bragging rights among the Spanish branch of the League Managers' Association.
The latter was almost celebrating after 25 minutes when Dimitar Berbatov headed towards the bottom right-hand corner of Pepe Reina's net. The Golden Glove winner had to be at his clean-sheet keeping best to push the ball out for a corner.
The result might have been academic here, but elsewhere in the Premier League fingernails were at a premium as teams diced with destiny at both ends of the table. News of a Man Utd opener promoted surreal celebrations around nine tenths of the Lane, one of the few stadiums in England where United are the lesser of two evils.
The second-half began where the first left off, though a neat piece of combination play between Gerrard and Torres soon presented the Spain international with a fine chance to make it 33 for the season. So often this year Premier League goalkeepers have lost the battle of nerves when face-to-face with El Nino but not this time, Cerny using his legs to pull off an unlikely save. He was also there to thwart Andriy Voronin's low drive minutes later.
Spurs then opened up the Liverpool defence with some intricate passing which left Robbie Keane with a decent chance opening the scores. The Republic of Ireland man dragged his shot wide when he should have done better.
Finally the game was opening up. Next, Gerrard burst forward before unleashing a curler just over the bar, while down at the other end Pepe Reina had to be smart to stop a volley from the otherwise anonymous Steed Malbranque.
Then, on 68 minutes, came the breakthrough, Torres the architect in laying a superb throughball before Ukraine international dispatched with ease to take his personal tally for the season to six.
Spurs almost made an immediate reply when Berbatov sent a classy volley towards the Liverpool goal. Unfortunately for him, Reina was equal to it with a world-class stop.
Instead it was the visitors who struck again with a trademark goal from, who else, Torres. The 24-year old turned Alan Hutton on a sixpence before tucking home his 24th league goal of the season.
It was turning into a classic all of a sudden. Well, maybe. Hutton almost made it three when he headed towards his own goal from close range. His blushes were spared by the excellent Cerny.
Liverpool then hit the bar through Torres after great work from substitute Yossi Benayoun.
The Israeli could have bagged a couple himself later on but 2-0 it was to remain.
Elsewhere, United won the title after beating Wigan, while Derby, Birmingham and Reading have all been relegated.

Little Sam To Become Rafa's Right-Hand Man
According to the latest press reports, former Bolton manager Sammy Lee is set to take over the vacant assistant manager's job at Liverpool.
The ex England and Liverpool midfielder has plenty of previous experience in the role, most famously as Sam Allardyce's right-hand man at the Reebok, and he also already a close associate of Reds boss Rafa Benitez from his time in Spain
In fact, Benitez advocated Lee's appointment when former first-team coach Alex Miller accepted an offer to become manager of J League outfit JEF United Chiba last month.
Liverpool chief executive Rick Parry is said to have held numerous discussions with Lee during the course of the week, and all indications are that an agreement will be reached.
This will not be the first time that Lee has been involved in the backroom at Anfield having previously been reserve team manager and first team coach at the club under Graeme Souness and Gerard Houllier.
Benitez, in the meanwhile, has suggested that he will be thinking about how best to prepare the club for the coming season even while on holiday with his family.
“I don’t tend to have too much time away from football, but I will try to switch off for a bit,” he said. “I will have to try to hide my mobile phone, and if my wife can't find out about it I’ll try and keep it on me.
“But if she finds it I’m sure she’ll throw it in the swimming pool.” Derek Wanner, Goal.com

Club captain Steven Gerrard has paid tribute to teammates Fernando Torres and Ryan Babel after fans voted them Player and Young Player of the Season respectively.
So Stevie, Fernando has been voted Player of the Season by fans – quite an achievement considering the year people like you and Javier have had?
I enjoy playing with him, it's great to have him here and he's been Player of the Year hands down. His movement and runs are fantastic. Hopefully he can take this into next season.
Besides his 33 goals, why do you think the fans have taken to him like they have?
What has struck me about him, besides the goals, is his workrate and how much he's up for it. Usually when you bring in foreign players there can be a concern about whether they will be able to handle the physical side of the Premier League. How long are they going to take to adapt to the push and shove? But, from the first game against Chelsea, he was all over their defenders, harassing them. If he gets kicked he's straight back up. He loves it! This is what has struck me most because I always expected him to get the goals.
Yes, he doesn't go down – you never see him dive, do you?
He is a powerful boy, he doesn't go down. He is strong, has great character and works hard for the team. He's a great buy so far.
Okay, Ryan Babel scooped Young Player of the Season– what have you made of his debut year?
It's been good. He's young and he's made a big impact from the bench, and he's done well in some matches he's started. He's got a bright future. If he's willing to learn then he's got the right players around him to help his game. It's all about Ryan now and how much he wants to take his game to the next level, because he's certainly got the attributes.
You get the feeling that, despite making a good start, there's even more to come from Ryan, don't you?
Ryan has got the ability, there's no doubt about it. He's strong, quick, can set goals up and score. He's got it all. I've seen it with so many players when they've had this ability and not taken it to the next level. It's up to Ryan now how much he wants to be one of the top players about, because he certainly could be.

Liverpool Football Club today confirmed that Swiss international defender Philipp Degen will sign a contract with the club on July 1.
The right sided full-back - who will represent his country at this summer's European Championships - is out of contract with Borussia Dortmund this summer and has opted to begin a new career on Merseyside from next season.
Degen, 25, spent four seasons in his homeland with FC Basel before his move to the Bundesliga and will provide competition for Steve Finnan and Alvaro Arbeloa in the right-back role at Anfield.
Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez said: "Philipp is still young but has gained great experience from playing in the Bundesliga with Borussia Dortmund and on the international stage with Switzerland. He also played in the Champions League during his time with Basel and so is used to top level football.
"He is an offensive player with great energy and a winning mentality. His strength is going forward and I am confident he will be prove to be a quality addition to our squad."
He added: "Sometimes you can find these players on the market. When you find a player like him who costs no money it means you can use money for improving other parts of the squad.
"He is a good signing, a player of potential, who can help us improve in the wide areas."
Looking ahead to the move, Degen said: "When I received the offer from Liverpool, there was no doubt I would accept it. They are one of the biggest clubs in the world and I am looking forward to the challenge of establishing myself there and playing in the best league there is."

Dossena made his Serie A debut on November 18 2001 and he was thrown in at the deep end as his first appearance was against bitter rivals Chievo in the Derby di Verona and he played alongside emerging talents such as Mauro Camoranesi, Alberto Gilardino, Massimo Oddo, Marco Cassetti and Adrian Mutu. He was quick to adapt within a side boasting plenty of youth and brilliant talent with massive potential. Onwards And Upwards Dossena spent four years with the Gialloblu but in 2002 his side were relegated to Serie B following a last day defeat to Piacenza. It was a steep learning curb for the player but he kept his place in the side and decided to stay where as most of his team mates jumped ship. It was a wise decision which paid off in 2005 when he was signed by Serie A outfit Udinese. Fiery character Serse Cosmi, who coached the left-back at the time, decided his left back was surplus to requirements at the Stadio Friuli and he sent him on loan to Treviso. Dossena made 21 first team appearances for the Biancocelesti but he couldn't stop them sliding into Serie B. At the end of the 2005/06 season, the stopper was recalled back to the Bianconeri by Giovanni Galeone. The stopper went on to feature 28 times for the Zebrette and he was soon to be reunited with his old coach from Verona. Galleone was sacked by the Stadio Fruili based outfit after falling out with the club's directors. Alberto Malesani, who played a big part in Dossena's early career at the Gialloblu, was reunited with his former Verona star. Rise To Fame In just two years, the powerful defender has made massive strides towards a rewarding career. He has played 63 times for Udinese and this season he has impressed in Serie A. His performances against the top four clubs in particular were outstanding. He kept the Nerazzurri's star studied line up quiet in the 0-0 draw back in January. Dosena marked Zlatan Ibrahimovic out of the game as his side stole a valueable point against the league leaders. The left-back was dangerous all night and his constant runs and dangerous crosses from the wings caused the Nerazzurri problems. The Udinese number 8 also gave his side a shock lead against Juventus but they went on to lose the game 2-1. The defender's work at the back helped his side earn a very respectable sixth place finish which rewarded them with a UEFA Cup place. However, the former Verona man might not feature in the competition. Anfield Awaits The Italian stopper has the chance to play in the Champions League next term with Liverpool who are on the verge of signing their target. Rafa Benitez has been impressed by the Bianconero and the Reds are focused on taking the rising star to Anfield as a replacement for John Arne Riise. Dossena has similar qualities to the Norwegian but he is more graceful on the ball and has a sweeter first touch. He is also excellent in the air and has a commanding presence at the back. His current coach Pasquale Marino has revealed that the player will move to Liverpool. It is believed the Reds are close to signing the defender from Lodi for around £8m. The future is looking bright for the stopper and no doubt he will impress wherever he ends up playing.
